2024 Patio Trends: Blending Indoor And Outdoor Spaces
According to Houzz, the demand for outdoor spaces has increased by 50% since 2020, signaling the growing popularity of seamless indoor-outdoor living. This reflects homeowners’ increasing desire to create a harmonious living environment by integrating the natural beauty and open feel of the outdoors with the comfort and aesthetics of indoor places.
New 2024 Patio Cover Trend: The K-BANA™ Manual Roof
The preference towards blending interior and exterior areas emphasizes the significance of design components that establish a coherent whole. A smooth indoor-outdoor transition requires extending flooring materials from interior to outdoor spaces, utilizing complementary or comparable color schemes, and incorporating natural components like stone and wood.
Like Azenco Outdoor’s K-BANA™ Manual louvered Roof, you may match the manual louvered pergola’s floor color to your patio’s. These architectural choices create a harmonious transition between indoor and outdoor surroundings and improve the visual appeal of living areas.
Architectural features like motorized louvers enable seamless interaction. Simple transitions between natural light are made possible by Azenco Outdoor’s R-BLADE™ motorized louvered pergola, allowing dynamic interactions between interior and outdoor areas.
Embracing Multifunctionality And Customization In Patio Design
A statistic from the National Association of Realtors (2023) shows how the world of home design is always changing: 64% of homeowners currently want their patio to serve several purposes, a percentage that is predicted to increase by 5% in 2024.
Multifunctional patios are becoming the heart of the home, hosting everything from quiet, sunny meditation sessions to outdoor offices and mostly lively evening soirees under the stars.
Covered Functional Outdoor Kitchen
Customization is at the heart of outdoor living, a trend shaped by modern homeowners’ interests and lifestyles. Based to the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), 75% of millennials have expressed an interest in outdoor kitchens in 2023. The number of entertainment areas has risen by 40% since 2021, suggesting an increase in interest for personalized patio spaces that expand beyond functionality.
Pergola Customization
Patio customization possibilities are endless and adaptable to a wide range of design preferences. Azenco Outdoor’s R-SHADE™ insulated roof pergola provides architectural elegance and shade, while the R-BLADE™ louvered pergola offers a breezy feel. From integrated fire pits to comfy seating areas, each feature can be customized to meet the homeowner’s needs, transforming the patio into a real extension of the home’s living space.
The distinction between indoors and the outdoors is fading away as personalization and customization become more and more significant. Today’s homeowners seek solutions that represent their aesthetic preferences while also meeting the necessities of their specific lives. The opportunity to customize their outdoor buildings and furniture so that each space is not only functional but also a true statement of personal style and vision.
Smart Solutions: Technology Enhances The Patio Experience
With 82% of homeowners interested in outdoor innovation (NKBA, 2023) and a $154.4 billion worldwide smart house industry (Statista, 2023), smart solutions are becoming a growing trend in patio design. From motorized louvers to integrated LED lighting, technological advancements are transforming the way we interact with and enjoy outdoor areas.
Home Automation Extends To Outdoor Spaces
Outdoor automation takes the lead, providing both convenience and efficiency. Motorized louvers offer personalized shading solutions, allowing homeowners to control sunlight exposure and ventilation to their liking. Integrated LED lighting not only lights the patio area but also provides energy-efficient solutions that help to save costs and promote sustainability.
With the development of smart controls and voice-activated assistants, it is now possible to operate patio amenities such as lighting or heating and cooling elements with simple voice requests or at the touch of a button, adding ease and refinement to outdoor living areas. Smart solutions allow homeowners to take their patio experience to the next level by providing the ideal environment for entertaining guests.
Future-Proofing Your Patio Investment: Durability And Adaptability
Durability and adaptability are crucial factors for homeowners wanting to invest in their outdoor areas in the fast-growing outdoor living product industry, which is estimated to reach $26.8 billion by 2027 (Freedonia Group, 2022). As the business expands, the demand for long-lasting, adaptable patio structures increases. These 2024 patio trends are demonstrated by Azenco Outdoor’s durable, weather-resistant aluminum pergola structures, which not only provide greater longevity but also have a modular design that allows for future customization.
The growing patio trends such as versatility, customization, and smart technology are key. Having spaces that adapt easily to our needs, whether for a peaceful retreat or lively social gatherings is becoming a must-have. With smart tech integration, convenience is at every homeowner fingertips, making outdoor living both sophisticated and sustainable.

What to look for when buying a gas and charcoal combo grill
✔️ Type: The most common type of gas and charcoal grill combo is the side-by-side grill, which has separate compartments for charcoal and gas grilling that function independently. Convertible gas and charcoal grills can switch between charcoal and gas grilling configurations via removable trays or burner systems that can be swapped out to accommodate either type of grilling. Both of these styles can be found in the built-in grill category, which is designed to be installed into outdoor kitchen islands for a seamless, integrated look. All types can have smoker options, whether as an offset attachment or the ability to simply add wood chips to the charcoal bed.
✔️ Materials: Opt for a grill constructed with durable materials such as heavy-duty stainless steel and porcelain-covered grill plates for durability and rust resistance.
✔️ Warranty: Reputable manufacturers stand behind their products with robust warranties. Look for a grill backed by a warranty of at least five years that covers essential components like gas burners and ignition systems, which are prone to early wear and tear.
✔️ Accessories: Enhancements like a one-touch ignition system, warming racks, side burners, fold-out side tables and ample utensil storage can elevate your grilling experience.
✔️ Price: As much as possible, prioritize quality over affordability. Budget-friendly combo grills may compromise construction and longevity, leading to premature breakdowns and rusting. Invest in a high-quality grill that you can afford.

Are gas and charcoal combo grills worth it?
While combo grills offer the allure of gas and charcoal grilling in one package, they come with trade-offs. To maximize your investment, make sure you will regularly utilize both cooking methods, and weigh the pros and cons before deciding whether this type of grill is right for you.
Pros:
You’ll get the speed of gas and the smoky taste of charcoal in one appliance.
A combo grill is more economical than purchasing separate gas and charcoal grills.
You’ll conserve space on your porch or patio with one grill instead of two.
Cons:
Like nearly any appliance that offers multi-mode cooking, combo grills perform averagely across both methods and excel at neither gas nor charcoal grilling.
Combo grills are often larger and bulkier than a single grill of either type, which can potentially pose challenges in smaller outdoor spaces.

More prime spots

Just one example of less-obvious places to watch the game is La Cave Wine and Food Hideaway at Wynn, which will offer an all-you-can-eat package ($195 per person, with bottomless bar options for an additional $115 per person). Every seat in the lounge, dining room and indoor/outdoor garden room and terrace will have a view of the game.

Super expectations
Nevada sportsbooks took in $153.2 million in wagers (what’s called the handle) for last year’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, the fourth highest of all time but well short of the $179.8 million bet in the 2022 game between the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals.
Kornegay said there may be some fatigue among bettors about the Chiefs, who have appeared in three of the last four Super Bowls. A matchup between teams that haven’t been to the biggest stage in a while, like the Buffalo Bills and the Dallas Cowboys, would create even more electricity surrounding the game, he said.
“Their fan bases are extremely national, and they’re both hungry. With those two teams, you would certainly look at another record for Super Bowl handle,” he said. But with the extra number of VIPs coming to town and the larger wagers that come with them, he expects betting on this year’s game to achieve a new record regardless of who plays.
Kornegay, a veteran Las Vegas bookmaker, is famous for developing proposition bets (wagers not tied to the final score or outcome of a game). Expect the SuperBook at Westgate to post more than 500 proposition bets by Feb. 1.
He said he was very skeptical that the NFL would ever allow Las Vegas to have a team or host a Super Bowl because of the league’s long-held stance against sports gambling. That changed in 2018 when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a federal ban on sports gambling, allowing states other than Nevada to provide bookmaking and betting at casinos and racetracks.
“It was not that long ago where Las Vegas couldn’t even advertise during the Super Bowl,” Kornegay said. “We were the bad boys for the longest time, but now we’re all family. And we couldn’t be happier!”

Gas, charcoal and pellet grills are great for taking your cooking outdoors, but a lot of people live in apartments and other spots where open flames aren’t permitted. At CES 2024, Manufacturers debuted all-electric grills that can be used in those places since the heating element for both isn’t much different than an oven or stove. And because grilling has entered the modern age, both of these are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connected, so you can monitor progress and adjust temperatures from your favorite comfy chair. Choosing the perfect location is crucial to ensure a truly rewarding outcome and a seamless integration of your outdoor cooking space into your existing outdoor living area.
When it comes to exciting outdoor kitchen locations, the possibilities are endless. From a New York City rooftop patio to a luxurious poolside kitchen in a spacious backyard, you can create a stylish outdoor kitchen that suits your unique outdoor space and enhances the overall ambiance of your home.
Whether you prefer a cozy patio kitchen or a grand grill island as the focal point of your backyard, the key is to select a location that not only meets your functional needs but also complements your outdoor living room and elevates your outdoor cooking experience. Designing an Open-Air Cooking Space
Once you’ve chosen the perfect location, it’s time to design your open-air cooking space. A well-planned layout, durable materials, and functional zones for cooking, prep work, and serving are essential elements to consider. Some materials that can help you create the perfect outdoor kitchen setup include:
Brick
Concrete
Stainless steel
Wood
Complete your outdoor kitchen with stainless steel appliances, including a stainless steel grill.
Explore different layouts like the L-shaped outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill, featuring a power burner, refrigerator, pull-out trash drawer, and access doors for a truly unique experience. Or, consider a charming wood-clad bar island opposite the grilling area for a unified look, with an outdoor refrigerator for added convenience. To enhance your outdoor living space, a fire feature or outdoor fireplace can be a perfect addition.
Regardless of the size of your outdoor space, designing an inviting open-air cooking space with a well-thought-out layout and functional zones will ensure an unforgettable outdoor cooking and dining experience for you and your guests.
Incorporating Outdoor Dining Spaces
A great outdoor kitchen isn’t complete without a comfortable and inviting outdoor dining area. Design dining spaces that complement your kitchen, offering ample space, and a seamless flow between cooking and dining zones. From bar seating and counter stools to patio furniture and outdoor dining sets, there are numerous seating options to choose from, ensuring your guests can relax and enjoy their meals in style.
Enhance your outdoor dining space with features like built-in lighting on the ceiling or a giant chandelier over the dining table for a stunning visual effect. By incorporating an outdoor dining area into your outdoor kitchen design, you’ll create an inviting atmosphere that encourages guests to linger and enjoy the fresh air, making your outdoor space the ultimate destination for entertaining and al fresco dining.
Selecting the Right Appliances and Features
To make the most out of your outdoor kitchen, it’s essential to choose the right appliances and features that not only enhance your cooking experience but also suit your personal preferences and budget. Consider the following options:
Gas grills
Pizza ovens
Side burners
Charcoal grills
Stainless-steel grills
Griddles/Hibachis
Wood chip smokers
Outdoor refrigerators
Cocktail stations
Sinks
Storage options
Bar seating
Pull-out trash drawer
Think about the types of cooking surfaces you’ll need and how to make the most of the space. Ensure the appliances fit your budget, and don’t forget to plan for:
Storage
Trash and recycling bins
Cleaning supplies
Tableware
By selecting the right appliances and features for your outdoor kitchen, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying the ultimate outdoor cooking experience, complete with tantalizing smoky flavors and effortless digital controls.
Weatherproofing and Protecting Your Outdoor Kitchen
Protecting your outdoor kitchen from the elements is crucial to ensure its longevity and continued enjoyment. To keep your kitchen safe and secure, consider the following:
Use weather-resistant materials for your outdoor kitchen.
Install shelter options like pergolas or awnings to provide protection from rain and sun.
Use appliance covers to protect your outdoor kitchen appliances from dust and debris.
For small outdoor kitchens, consider roof overhangs, pergolas, or outdoor umbrellas as shelter options that provide both protection and style.
In addition to weather-proofing materials and shelter options, be sure to use waterproof covers and sealants to protect your outdoor kitchen appliances and furniture. Make sure you regularly clean your grill, appliances, and stainless steel – both to enhance its appearance, but also to promote longevity. Regularly inspect your outdoor kitchen for signs of damage or deterioration, and replace any items that show signs of wear and tear to maintain your outdoor space’s functionality and visual appeal.
Proper lighting is essential for any outdoor kitchen, ensuring usability and safety during both day and night. Illuminate your outdoor kitchen with a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Consider installing string lights hung from the pergola for a cozy feel, lamps with flexible necks to adjust the light, and outdoor string lighting for a fun nighttime hangout spot.
By incorporating a variety of lighting solutions in your outdoor kitchen, you’ll not only enhance the visual appeal of your space, but also improve its functionality during both day and night. As a result, you and your guests can enjoy a comfortable and well-lit outdoor cooking and dining experience, no matter the time of day.
Landscaping and Decor Ideas for Outdoor Kitchens

From a stunning tiered landscape design featuring natural greenery to colorful containers that bring vibrancy to the space, there are countless ways to enhance your outdoor kitchen with landscaping and decor ideas.
Take inspiration from websites like Pinterest and Houzz to find creative decor ideas that suit your personal style and the overall aesthetic of your outdoor space. By incorporating landscaping and decor elements into your outdoor kitchen design, you’ll create a unique and inviting atmosphere that complements your cooking and dining experience, making your outdoor space the ultimate destination for entertaining and relaxation.
Small Space Outdoor Kitchen Solutions
If you have limited outdoor space, don’t worry! You can still create a functional and stylish outdoor kitchen with space-saving designs, compact appliances, and multi-purpose furniture. Transform a balcony into an outdoor kitchen space with a space-saving grilling station and cozy lounge seating, or consider an extra-long grill island setup that doubles the cooking area and provides additional dining space.
Maximize the functionality of your small outdoor kitchen by selecting compact appliances like:
Built-in grills
Mini refrigerators
Space-saving sinks
Storage options
By making the most of your limited space, you can still enjoy the benefits of outdoor cooking and entertaining without sacrificing style or functionality.
Integrating Entertainment Features
To create a fun and engaging atmosphere for your guests, consider integrating entertainment features like outdoor TVs, sound systems, and bar areas into your outdoor kitchen design. A flatscreen TV mounted near the cooking or dining area allows guests to enjoy the game while savoring delicious outdoor-cooked meals, while a quality sound system can set the mood for any gathering.
By incorporating entertainment features into your outdoor kitchen, you’ll create a lively and exciting atmosphere that encourages guests to linger and enjoy themselves. Your outdoor space will become the ultimate destination for entertaining friends and family, making your outdoor kitchen the envy of the neighborhood.
Eco-Friendly Outdoor Kitchen Ideas
Incorporating eco-friendly elements into your outdoor kitchen design is not only beneficial for the environment, but can also add a unique touch to your space. Consider using sustainable materials like jute, bamboo, or sisal for rugs, recycling and reusing items, and incorporating rainwater catchment systems or solar ovens.
Energy-efficient appliances, solar-powered lighting, and eco-friendly landscaping are also great ways to create a more sustainable outdoor kitchen. By incorporating eco-friendly elements into your outdoor kitchen design, you’ll not only help protect the environment, but also create a space that reflects your values and commitment to sustainability.
Customizing Your Outdoor Kitchen Style
Your outdoor kitchen should reflect your personal taste and style, whether it’s rustic, modern, minimalist, or a unique combination of styles. Customize your outdoor kitchen with design elements that suit your preferences, from materials like brick and wood to unique layouts and color schemes.
Consider popular design styles such as rustic farmhouse, modern plank, Hamptons style, island getaway, or even create your unique combination of styles to truly make your outdoor kitchen your own. By customizing your outdoor kitchen style, you’ll create a space that not only meets your functional needs, but also reflects your personality and individual flair.

Do you need planning permission for an outdoor kitchen?
Generally, you don’t need planning permission for an outdoor kitchen; however, major electrical or plumbing work may require a permit.
Are you currently in search of outdoor kitchen ideas? There’s nothing quite like embracing outdoor living, whether it’s firing up the bbq grills or hosting a party under a patio cover in your backyard. Maybe you crave a sleek pizza oven or marble countertops, or just want to host a casual backyard barbecue surrounded by family and friends. No matter your style, an outdoor kitchen and cooking area is an opportunity to see outdoor space in a new light. “An outdoor kitchen is not only a natural extension of indoor living, but it also allows for hosting a larger gathering,” says Rhode Island–based interior designer Lindy Lowney. However, setting one up can also be an overwhelming project, filled with questions you need to answer about everything from materials to price points. 33 Beautiful Outdoor Kitchen Ideas https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/outdoor-kitchen-ideas
A modern outdoor kitchen can serve as a place to host and connect with family and friends while also enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. It’s a treasured option that many families are seeking out. “Many homeowners are opting to create outdoor living environments conducive to easier entertaining and simple cleanup,” says Lowney.
With that ethos in mind, we spoke with more than 30 designers who have created unique outdoor dining areas for inspiration. Maybe you’re just looking for design ideas for an outdoor kitchen, or you want something new to complement your backyard landscaping. Perhaps you’re considering hiring a design professional to set it up for you or you want to do it yourself. Below are plenty of outdoor kitchen designs to spark your imagination…and your appetite. But first, make sure you know what you need to know about outdoor kitchen spaces.
What are the best materials to use for an outdoor kitchen?
“Stainless steel is very durable and easy to clean,” says Lowney. “It withstands moisture and heat and holds up well to the outdoor elements.” When it comes to the countertops, Lowney suggests granite because of its strength and durability with minimal maintenance. “With a strong commercial sealer, it will resist staining and moisture. Porcelain is also becoming popular due its ease of maintenance and attractive price point,” she adds.
How much does it cost to build an outdoor kitchen?
Certainly, building a full-size outdoor kitchen with a prep area, stainless-steel appliances, and a kegerator is a pricey option. Lowney says that it’s “really difficult to put a number on” outdoor kitchens, since “cost can vary greatly depending on the design, size, labor required, and materials you use.” However, many people choose to DIY their own outdoor kitchen, working to plan and build the space with a strict budget. Remember, even a humble mini fridge next to a wisely designed counter space can be the foundation of your outdoor kitchen design. When you’re dining al fresco, having your own outdoor kitchen can be enjoyable with just a pair of comfortable bar stools at a high-top table.
What do I do about my outdoor patio kitchen during the winter?
There are so many variables that go into designing an outdoor entertainment space, with one of the most important ones being the environment you live in. Folks who live in dry areas with little precipitation don’t have to worry as much about the threat of snow or hurricanes. By building a covered patio kitchen, you aren’t as limited to when you can use the space. Lowney, who based in New England, recommends building a covered kitchen area to ensure it lasts longer. “It extends the longevity of the investment,” she notes.
Below, browse a range of backyard kitchen ideas to get you started on your outdoor kitchen journey.
1. Backsplash beauty
A uniquely-patterned backsplash is a stunning focal point and a great place to start when searching for patio kitchen ideas. Nancy Epstein, founder and chairman of the board at Artistic Tile, chose walls of a custom glass mosaic in a languid lily pad pattern for her home. Under limestone columns wrapped with Star of Jasmin plants, the space is delightfully fragrant. “My own yard feels as lush and indulgent as the finest outdoor spaces I have experienced anywhere in the world, and I use it almost every day from spring to fall,” says Epstein.
2. Continuous countertops
A very popular outdoor kitchen trend is the extension of the kitchen island outside to create bar seating, like in this home by Kern & Co. Through a large kitchen window, the countertops connect the indoor space to the outdoor entertaining area.
3. Serenity and style
Comfortable lounge furniture, sleek appliances, and clever storage space is always a win. Houston-based Mary Patton of Mary Patton Design says clients have been asking for kitchen spaces that evoke a balance of serenity and sophistication with a touch of fun. “Amenities like a fireplace or a television create the perfect environment for entertaining,” Patton adds.
4. Year-round use
Making use of an outdoor kitchen year-round can be difficult in all climates. Cathy Purple Cherry, founder and principal of Purple Cherry Architects, found a way to make the most of all seasons at this Virginia pool house. Its outdoor kitchen can be used nearly all year long thanks to a translucent roll-down screen hidden in the wood-planked ceiling that can be lowered and tied off. There are also infrared ceiling-mounted heaters.
5. Poolside pizza oven
Tucked in the vineyards in Napa Valley, this Stanly Ranch home, designed by Bob White, has a pizza oven next to the grilling station, with plenty of space for food prep. “When a home is designed right, they are about celebrating, creating, and honoring a sense of place, capturing moments and memories in people’s lives—all with a spectacular view,” says White.
6. Wood cabinetry
Soft and welcoming, this wood cabinetry from Marie Flanigan Interiors creates a rustic enclave with plenty of storage space inside the kitchen cabinets.
7. Urban kitchen with a view
City dwellers can experience the best kitchen design ideas as well. “Our goal was to make it easy for residents to have that backyard experience,” says Matthew Snyder, co-owner and codeveloper of The Archer in Boston’s Beacon Hill.
8. White brick and steel
Adding contrast to the steel doors that open up to the sitting room, this white brick stands out. “The bar just in front of the grill adds a place to sit, relax, enjoy a drink, and linger a little longer,” “This kitchen is the best of outdoor living.” says Marie Flanigan of Marie Flanigan Interiors.
9. Custom millwork
This Bali-inspired home by Miami-based designer Brittany Farinas of House of One features a kitchenette that blurs the line between indoors and outdoors. “We incorporate millwork into our projects, so the space was perfect to create a custom-built feature, and the stone was carefully sourced by Opustone,” says Farinas.
10. More pizza ovens
A pizza oven is a highly coveted asset for outdoor kitchens. At the Ojai Valley Inn’s Casa Elar, the Tuscan-style kitchen’s outdoor pizza oven makes an unexpected yet integrated focal point at the resort’s culinary events space, The Farmhouse.
11. Covered patio
Weather is unpredictable, but a covered patio can be enjoyed in almost any environment. This Jennifer Risko Smith design creates a shelter from the storm while connecting the indoor kitchen with the pool area, main kitchen, and dining in between. “You can easily pass things to the outdoor kitchen and service the counter and table seating from inside,” says Smith.
12. Seamless flow
At Brisa del Mar at Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, the six-bedroom villa’s indoor-outdoor kitchen has a clean, contemporary aesthetic with an open floor plan and spacious outdoor area.
13. Concrete and stone
ADVERTISEMENT
Cool-toned color palettes and modern design styles are extremely popular. Consider elegant pavers or stacked stone. “These materials create smooth, clean lines that complement other elements, like stainless-steel appliances, and coordinate well with pops of color,” says Joe Raboine, director of residential hardscapes at Belgard.
14. Marble and wood
A strong contrast of marble and wood creates an elegant yet welcoming space in this outdoor kitchen by Meredith Owen Interiors, which is adjacent to the indoor kitchen for ease. “Meals are easily prepped inside and brought out to be grilled. This kitchen overlooks the pool and outdoor dining and living areas, which means the entertaining doesn’t stop, even if you’re grilling burgers,” says Owen.
15. Backyard beauty
This Studio William Hefner kitchen embraces the natural landscape surrounding it. Tucked away in the backyard, the greenery serves as an ideal backdrop.
16. Dining area drama
While the kitchen is important for prep, you may want to put the focus on your outdoor dining area, like in this well-lit outdoor space created by Sterling Huddleson Architecture.
17. Fireside comfort
Cozy up by the outdoor fireplace and enjoy the views around you. At The Parker, a new building in Boston, Linda Zarifi of Linda Zarifi Design created an elegant firepit area that’s ideal for outdoor entertaining.
18. Indoor-outdoor integration
This outdoor space was built to mirror the adjacent indoor space, explains Amanda Barnes of Amanda Barnes Interiors. “You can read the barbecue thermometer from the kitchen window so you can prep inside and keep an eye on everything outside,” says Barnes.
19. Shady section
This Design Lines Signature space offers an escape from the sun-drenched pool area and allows lush plants to serve as outdoor decor. “Nature is the backdrop here,” says designer Judy Pickett.
20. Waterfront grilling station
Choose materials that won’t erode in the elements. Photo: Drew Birch
Fire up the gas grill with the natural beauty of the water flowing behind you. Bridgette Caporaso of Sketch Design Studio chose organic materials like wood and concrete for this waterfront home since “salt, water, and sun exposure is very abrasive on many finishes.”
21. Textured backsplash
Add a punch to your backsplash with texture, like in this property by Design West that features quartz and tiles. “Our design teams chose to use a textured backsplash in these spaces to add depth, interest, and visual appeal to the areas,” says Morgan Bratcher, lead designer, and Caitlin Godwin, interior designer.
22. Rooftop kitchen
Whether you’re having a chat around the firepit or lounging with a good book, this rooftop embraces distinct rooms, says Judy Pickett of Design Lines Signature. “Versatility is key when designing spaces—nowadays you can do so many activities outdoors, and having a space that is designed specifically for all of these potential activities is important.”
23. Fireplace lounge
An outdoor living room is ideal for entertaining, especially in this Jennifer Risko Smith–designed property. “This outdoor kitchen features modern details and pops of color,” says Smith. “It is one hundred percent focused on providing every comfort of the interior outside—beer on tap, barbecue, counter seating, and an adjacent fireplace lounge area and full dining area with heaters, interesting lighting, and views.” Grab a seat by the fireplace and soak up the greenery that surrounds it.
24. Grilling and smoking
This project takes grilling and smoking to the next level. Photo: Jeffrey Brian Riemer
Designed for a client that’s a high-end grilling and smoking enthusiast, Kate Anne Gross of Kate Anne Designs said the design team “had to really step up our outdoor kitchen game to meet the expectations.”
“The key was incorporating everything without it looking cluttered or taking away from the aesthetics of the island itself,” says Gross. A waterfall polished-cement counter creates a modern, industrial look.
25. Bluestone, brick, and shiplap
Asked to combine a decorative backdrop with architectural lighting at this East Coast home, the Kate Anne Designs team combined a rustic creamy brick veneer with bluestone, contrasting it with white shiplap.
26. Jewel-toned accents
Rich blues and reds pop against organic, natural furnishings and a lime-washed masonry exterior in this home by Benjamin Johnston Design. “The home’s interior color story ranges from earthy neutrals to moody jewel tones, and that palette served as the foundation for this area’s design,” says Johnston.
27. Walk-up bar
With a resort-style vibe in mind, Benjamin Johnston Design created this outdoor kitchen with a walk-up bar at the far end of the pool under a pavilion. “A covered outdoor dining space is essential in the summer, and the walk-up bar and full outdoor kitchen are great for larger events, while still perfect for a weekend barbecue with family as well,” says Johnston.
28. Prioritizing privacy
A cozy nook can offer privacy, as well as all the necessary tools and equipment for cooking up a feast. “This grill area was incredibly important, as the homeowners are restaurateurs with a passion for entertaining,” says Marie Flanigan of Marie Flanigan Interiors. “Despite the grill being offset, it’s proximal to the outdoor eating and living areas for maximum efficiency.”
29. Mini fridge moment
Make the most of your space with a mini fridge, which provides easy access when you’re ready to enjoy some outdoor dining. Arterberry Cooke and Captex Construction created this accessible space with a stunning view.
30. Organic fibers
At El Cultivo, Hacienda AltaGracia’s organic garden and kitchen in Costa Rica, New York–based designer Nina Gotlieb used a neutral color palette and rich textures of wood, stone, and organic fibers.
31. Pink and black
Color reigns supreme, even if it’s subtle. Lauren Lerner of Living with Lolo says an outdoor kitchen doesn’t need to be elaborate to be functional. “We had a large island and only a grill. The pink grill adds an unexpected touch to this outdoor cooking space,” says Lerner. She also recommends adding lighting around the grill so you can cook after sunset.
32. Poolside placement
It’s all about location. Eddie Maestri of Maestri Studio wanted to create a functional structure that complemented this home’s architecture. “The placement of the structure allows adults to prepare food or drinks while maintaining an eye on children in the pool,” says Maestri. The firepit and overhead heaters are a desirable touch.
33. Built-in seating
Even a small outdoor kitchen can have a comfortable dining area. “Consider a banquette built into the patio wall. Providing both a soft seating area and reducing the footprint of a dining table and chairs, banquettes are a delightful small-space solution,” says Courtnay Tartt Elias of Creative Tonic Design.
An outdoor kitchen is a feature that so many homeowners want to have added to their property, especially here in Tennessee. There’s no denying how an outdoor kitchen can enhance your ability to entertain family and friends while taking advantage of favorable weather. There is also the improved aesthetics to your home that an outdoor kitchen brings.
However, one question that sometimes bubbles up, particularly if a homeowner is planning to sell their house, is how much value to your home does an outdoor kitchen add, and what is the ROI (Return On Investment)?
Let’s explore some of the factors that may go into answering this question.
Straight to the Data – Your Expected ROI
In terms of trying to place an actual number on what a homeowner can expect as an ROI on their outdoor kitchen investment, the range is actually quite wide. Depending on which data reports and surveys you analyze (for example, supermoney.com), a homeowner can expect a range of 50% to 200% of the original cost of building the outdoor kitchen to be the ROI.
This favorable ROI, along with the enjoyment that one receives from entertaining friends and family with an outdoor kitchen, is why these luxury elements are popular for homeowners in Las Vegas.
A favorable ROI of 50% to 200% should be expected on a properly designed and constructed outdoor kitchen.
Construction Materials & Appliance Brands Impact the Value of Your Outdoor Kitchen
As with just about anything else that deals with adding features to a home, one determining factor regarding value is the materials that the feature is constructed. Is your outdoor kitchen built using materials like granite, bluestone, marine-grade polymer, or stainless steel? There are a number of material options available and each one can influence the value of your outdoor kitchen.
Also, what brand of appliances will comprise your outdoor kitchen? Are you looking at appliances from a company like Blaze Outdoor Products or maybe a company such as Lynx? Perhaps Alfresco is the company that you’d rather have your appliances acquired from. Just as with construction materials, the brand and choice of which appliances to include will factor into your outdoor kitchen’s overall value.
Non-Tangible Factors For ROI
There are certain non-tangible elements that can go into determining the ROI of your outdoor kitchen. For example, how do your guests, or even potential home buyers, react to seeing your outdoor kitchen for the first time? How engaged are they in learning about all of the features that it has?
One other non-tangible factor is how well your outdoor kitchen compliments the appearance of your home and accompanying landscaping. Aesthetics in the real estate, home improvement, landscaping, and hardscaping industries may not have a specific dollar value attached, but they definitely can be influencing factors in purchasing decisions!
Outdoor kitchens become entertainment hubs By Stan Hanel
Luxury homebuilders often team with landscape architects to create gathering places that can seamlessly move a party outside, while still retaining comfort during both hot and cold seasons.
Custom outdoor kitchens have become a hub for this desert lifestyle. An outdoor bbq island is a sculpture of industrial art and a robust, weatherized food preparation center.
Modern outdoor kitchens are fabricated with concrete, finished stonework and wood. Embedded stainless steel appliances are molded into a wide array of hospitality features.
Most custom designs start with the hooded grill, the rock of the cooking and entertainment complex. The grill’s fuel sources will determine the type of cooking and resulting taste sensations, whether using propane tanks, piped natural gas, charcoal, wood, fuel pellets or electricity. The cooking tools for the host should be within ready reach, making it easy for a chef to transform raw meats, fruits and vegetables into a feast for the senses.
The bar is next. Food preparation and beverage creation usually require an integrated sink, refrigerator and multiple electrical outlets for appliances that can blend drinks and sauces. The bar section should include stainless steel cabinets and drawers for storage, and countertops and cutting blocks for staging ingredients. Extend the countertop area farther to create a dining space with surrounding stone tops and comfortable stools. The bar section should allow guests to interact with their hosts while sharing the food transformation experience.
Additional seating and dining areas may be located nearby the outdoor kitchen. These outdoor gathering spaces can be covered by a gazebo, a foldable umbrella, drop-down screens or a rooftop overhang that provide a protective barrier from changing desert weather. Accessory fans and misting units can help circulate air and moisture during hot summer months while radiant heaters, fire pits and fire tables can bring warmth to a chilly desert night.
Specialty cooking appliances enhance the versatility of the cooking space. Some examples are a Kamado smoker/grill, griddle, side burners, hot dog rotisseries, ice cream makes, kegerator, popcorn popper and even a wood-fired pizza oven.
Solar ovens that absorb direct sunlight to produce internal heat may soon find a niche use for outdoor cooking in the desert sun while not consuming electricity, natural gas, wood or other fuels.
GoSun makes a series of double-walled evacuated glass tubes that function as solar cookers to trap infrared rays inside a copper-coated cylindrical chamber. The glass tube is mounted on a foldable stand and is surrounded by curved aluminum reflectors that are adjustable to align with the moving sun. Internal cooking temperatures can reach 500 degrees from direct and reflected sunlight. A variety of meats, vegetables, pasta, rice, quick breads and other staples can be loaded into a long aluminum tray with a wooden handle that slides inside the evacuated glass tube.
Galaxy Outdoor Kitchens at 4425 Dean Martin Drive in Las Vegas has offered innovative design options to its customers for 30 years. The company showroom feels like an automotive performance shop, jammed full of glistening industrial art from multiple vendors that are made from stainless steel, granite, porcelain, ceramics, decorative glass, concrete and wood.
There are plenty of spare parts and cooking supplies on hand in different corners of the store, including big replacement knobs for grills and ovens, threaded plumbing fixtures, wood-based fuels, cooking utensils, an array of barbecue spices and lots of accessories.
“The company started because I wanted an outdoor kitchen for myself,” said Bruce Spangrud, owner and founder of Galaxy Outdoor. “Our company is the only one in the area to offer a lifetime warranty. We just reached 40,000 outdoor kitchen installations, recently.”
Designer Alejandro Oliva is available behind the central counter area with a CAD graphics workstation to help customers visualize how their choices of outdoor kitchen appliances can be integrated into their selections of cabinetry, access drawers, sinks and countertops. On-site consultations can be added, after a client has viewed initial design options inside the company showroom.
“Our job is to ask the right questions and come up with the right answers so that the customer is happy with the final purchase,” Spangrud said.
Custom outdoor kitchens can be designed into a variety of shapes to fit an outside patio space: rectangular, L-shaped, V-shaped, circular, curvy or even serpentine. Galaxy Outdoor kitchens are built on welded steel frameworks with a minimum of fasteners.
PermaBase concrete boards wrap around kitchen islands and can receive multiple types of finishing materials that include granite, tile, stacked stone, stucco and bamboo siding. Porcelain slabs are also becoming more popular in outdoor countertop designs. A separate showroom within the store has samples of different finishing materials for customers to consider.
Galaxy Outdoor maintains a network of recommended local contractors who can implement the company’s custom outdoor designs and integrate plumbing for water and natural gas, electrical wiring for air-conditioning outlets, lighting, audio/video components, and other external connections.
Outdoor kitchen installations are coordinated through General Manager Chris Hewitt. A project can take from four to six weeks, depending on size and complexity. Costs for custom outdoor kitchens normally range from $8,000 to $60,000.
Michael Gardner, owner of studio g Architecture and Luxus Design Build, created The New American Home of 2023 within the Ascaya community of Henderson. The showcase home was an integrated exhibit for the International Builders’ Show that convened at the Las Vegas Convention Center during February.
Gardner’s design approach to an outdoor kitchen extended the second-floor balcony overhang and the sidewalls of the living room area into the patio and pool area. The indoor living room merges with the outdoor recreational space through glass panel doors.
One sidewall integrates a fireplace feature while the other sidewall houses a Brown Jordan outdoor kitchen and island bar. Stainless steel appliances contrast against organic wood and stone materials that blend with the Ascaya terrain and landscapes. Comfortable lounge furniture, a serving table and chairs fill the center space where guests can gaze out across an infinity-edge pool to a panoramic view of the Las Vegas Valley below.
“You’ve got to look at all the systems of a home, collectively,” Gardner said. “How do they all inter-relate? Look at the systems as a whole and balance the components, while building responsibly to the climate you are in.”
Dennis Vang of Vangson Consulting is a top-rated landscape architect who has designed outdoor kitchen features for luxury homes in The Ridges and Summit communities of Summerlin.
He starts by talking with his clients about their lifestyles and aspirations, helping them make decisions about the location and functionality of each custom kitchen component.
“How do people entertain, how do they cook, what type of foods do they prefer?” Vang asked. “A sink may not be needed in a bar island if the outdoor kitchen is located closer to the home. A chef should be facing his guests, not have his back to them or on the side when cooking. The flow of the design of the prep area, cooking area and beverage area can make the outdoor kitchen space more interactive for everyone.”
Some of the cooking trends that Vang has noted are the inclusion of flat burners or griddles for bacon and eggs, wood-pellet smokers for meat curing, and Parrilla grills with hand-cranked elevating platforms. Raw foods on mesh trays in the Parrilla grill can be lowered close to the flames of the wood fire below.
Vang graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas after studying landscape architecture more than 20 years ago. He has watched his business grow alongside the development of master-planned luxury communities within the region.
Ozzie Kraft Enterprises Inc. has been installing outdoor pools and patio features in Las Vegas since 1942. The company crafted some of the original fountains at Caesars Palace and unique swimming pool designs for luxury homeowners. When working with a general architect or a landscape architect on a luxury home, Ozzie Kraft designers have sometimes integrated custom kitchen facilities into the company’s waterscapes.
“The outdoor kitchen design will often share the same modern lines as the home’s architecture,” said Terence Thornton, waterscape designer and project manager at Ozzie Kraft. “Natural stone countertops with waterfall edges are popular for both indoor and outdoor kitchens, creating a seamless connection.”
“Outdoor kitchens may also include the same entertainment media that are found inside the home, such as integrated audio, TV and video systems,” Thornton said.
Granddad’s backyard barbecue station has exploded in size and functionality during the modern age, since the time when Ozzie Kraft first built his outdoor pools and patios more than 80 years ago.
